The Next Draft

Date: 30 July–5 November (8 session)

If you’re looking for support to turn your full-length or almost finished draft into a submittable or publishable product, then this is the course for you.

Did you get to ‘the end’ but feel something is missing? Maybe you can’t get to the end no matter how hard you try and now you can’t see the forest for the trees? Maybe your story started in the wrong place and you need help seeing the ‘bigger picture’?

If you’re a little further along on your writing journey and looking for support and advice, join developmental editor Laurel Cohn to help you hone your craft. The more you understand what you need to do in the next draft, and how to go about it, the fewer drafts you will need to do in the long run. By the end of this course, you’ll have the tools and strategies you need to re-draft and finesse your manuscript for your chosen market.

For writers of fiction and narrative non-fiction with a complete draft of their manuscript who are willing to explore the challenging inner terrain that underlies critical engagement with your own work.

The Next Draft learning objectives:

  1. An understanding of the role the bigger picture plays in manuscript development
  2. Awareness of how elements such as theme, plot lines, characters and point of view interrelate to create a story design
  3. How to determine whether you have found the right structure for your work
  4. Specific tools and strategies to tackle the next draft with a five-step approach
  5. An appreciation of the challenging inner terrain of manuscript development

WHEN: 8 x Tuesday evenings, from 30 July to 5 November, 6.00– 7.30pm (South Australia time)
